Staying WARM in our YURT // Installing the Yurt Floor Insulation – Ep. 17

Keeping a yurt warm in the winter can be tricky. However, we’ve done quite a bit of research to find all the tips and tricks from other yurt dwellers out there. This research has helped us decide what to add to our yurt to keep it as warm as possible in the winter. At this point, we have done the following to keep our yurt warm in the winter. ** We added the manufacturer roof insulation to our yurt roof when we first put up our yurt. ** We installed off brand wall insulation to our yurt. We did that AFTER our yurt was put up. To see our process on that you can check out this video – https://youtu.be/o1B6Sv_Nabk ** We installed a pellet stove to heat our yurt. Check out the installation of our pellet stove here – https://youtu.be/kAJLMxOxdXU Now, we need to complete our floor insulation. We put in half of our floor insulation when we were building our yurt platform. However, we ran out of time and foam insulation panels. So we made the choice to complete the platform and come back later to complete the floor insulation. Well, “later” is now here, so in this episode, you will see us installing the remaining floor insulation to our yurt. To install the foam insulation panels we measured the space below the yurt for each panel. Then we slid the cut panels into place. After that we put nails into place as our blocking to hold the panels up. We did place the panels with about 1 inch of space between the flooring and the panels as we have read that that is the best way to trap more warmth into your floor. After the panels were cut and secured in place with the nail blocking, we sealed them in with spray foam. And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on YouTube. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 8 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own. Unfortunately, COVID-19 put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin. Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.
